How to Airbrush Baseball Helmets
Baseball helmets are one of the most eye-catching pieces of a baseball player's gear. They're also the logical place to display team logos or personal decorations. While some baseball players might opt to decorate their helmets with stickers and decals, or just have a generic helmet from the team's equipment bag, a motivated novice can create his own custom airbrush job on a baseball helmet in just a few minutes.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Painter's or masking tape
- Airbrush
- Airbrush-ready paint
- Airbrush patterns or templates
Instructions

1
Unscrew and remove the baseball helmet's face guard, if present. Also remove the ear liners, which should pull right out, and any other interior lining that can be removed from the helmet.
-
2
Cover the opening in the helmet with painter's tape or masking tape. You can also use painter's or masking tape to affix a sheet of plastic to cover the helmet's opening. The goal is to keep paint out of the helmet opening.

3
Select a base color for the helmet. Apply this base color to the entire outer surface of the helmet, using light, even pressure on the airbrush trigger to achieve a consistent coat.
-
4
Let the paint dry before taping over it to add patterns. Drying time depends on the paint you're using and may range from 5 to 30 minutes.
-
5
Paint your desired patterns on the helmet. Tape a stencil in place over the area to be painted, and tape off any nearby places on the helmet that you don't want to paint. Then apply the appropriate color of airbrush paint through the stencil.
-
6
Continue layering on patterns one color at a time until you achieve the desired effect.
-
7
Remove the painter's tape and any remaining stencils once you're done painting. Reinstall the face guard, ear liners and any interior lining you removed.

Tips & Warnings
You can make your own airbrush templates or patterns by tracing the shape you want on a sheet of flexible vinyl and then cutting out the shape with a sharp utility knife. Make sure you're using airbrush-ready paint in your airbrush. Any other type of paint will ruin the system.
Always wear a respirator and eye protection when working with airbrush paints in an enclosed area.
