How to Install House Doors

Split-jamb Door

Among the many chores a homeowner takes on, replacing doors is one that does not have to be tough. Research the type of door desired to discover anything peculiar about the door that might make installing it different from installing any other door. The best and easiest door to install is the prehung, split-jamb door.

Things You'll Need

• Split-jamb prehung door
• Pliers
• Phillips-head screwdriver
• Hammer
• Carpenter's level
• 8d finish nails
• Door shims
• Nail set
• Variable speed drill (optional)
• 1/16-inch drill bit (optional)

Instructions

1. Inspect the door unit for staples used to hold the split-jamb together during transit. Remove these with a hammer or pliers. Also, look for a nail that may have been used to keep the door from swinging while in transit.

2. Place the Phillips-head screwdriver on the underside of the hinge pin. Tap the screwdriver with the hammer to remove the hinge pin. Repeat this for the other hinge pins. Set the door aside for now.

3. Pull the split-jamb apart gently, and set the side without the hinges aside. Place the side with the door hinges on it in the opening for the door. Be certain the door will be swinging open into the desired room or hallway. Keep the space between the jamb and the studs in the wall even.

4. Place the carpenter's level against the side of the jamb with the hinges on it. Make certain it is plumb, and place some shims between the jamb and the studs. Secure the jamb to the studs with the finish nails.

5. Place the level on the top of the doorjamb to ensure the doorjamb is level. Move the free side of the jamb to make the top level. Once it is level, secure it with the finish nails. Use shims to make the install a solid one.

6. Place the other side of the split-jamb in place and secure it through the door casing. Set all the nail heads and fill them with wood putty or painter's caulk. Hang the door on its hinges.

Tips & Warnings

• Placing a block of wood under the door will help hold it level while reinstalling the door on its hinges. Use as many door shims as it takes to keep the door from rattling when it is used. As an option, drill pilot holes with a variable speed drill and a 1/16-inch drill bit.

• Do not leave power tools or nails within reach of children. Do not paint or stain the door in an unventilated area.
