Sometimes computer components conflict and cause device drivers to fail. Whether the case is a failed driver or one that was never installed to begin with, installing a device drive takes a short amount of time and is hard to do incorrectly.

      Download a copy of the device driver either from the installation disc or an online driver database. Create a new folder, and place the device driver in it.

      Go to the Start Menu and open the Control Panel. Locate the "System" icon and click on it. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click the "Device Manager" button.

      Locate "DVD/CD-ROM" drives in the Device Manager. The icon should have a smaller icon with a picture of an exclamation mark on it.

      Right click on the drive, and select "Properties" from the list of options. Click on the "Driver" tab, and then click the option labeled "Update Driver."

      Decline the Windows Update, and click "Next." Choose the option labeled "Install from a list or specific location."

      Click the "Browse" button. Browse for the folder where the device driver was copied. Click next to install the driver.
