When publishing files to a web server, it is often necessary to change permissions. While command-line users are accustomed to using the CHMOD command, graphical programs like CuteFTP remove this manual command line control. With a few simple steps, though, you can easily change file permissions using CuteFTP.

Change File Permissions (CHMOD) Using CuteFTP

  1. Step 1

Navigate to the appropriate remote directory. Launch the CuteFTP application by selecting the application from your computer's menu or double clicking the CuteFTP icon on the desktop. Connect to the remote server and navigate to the directory that contains the files or subdirectories to be modified.

  2. Step 2

Right click on the file or subdirectory to be modified. Once you have browsed to the appropriate directory, first left click on the file or subdirectory to select it. Once the file or subdirectory is selected, right click on the directory to access a menu of special commands.

  3. Step 3

Change file attributes. When the menu of special commands appears, navigate to the selection that reads "Change File Attributes" and select this option.

  4. Step 4

Apply the proper permissions. After selecting "Change File Attributes" in Step 3 above, a graphical menu will appear with options for changing file or directory permissions. Select the appropriate "Read," "Write" and "Execute" permissions for the file or subdirectory owner, the owner's group and members of the public. If you are unfamiliar with which options should be selected, consult any available documentation for the files or subdirectory you are installing.

  5. Step 5

Apply the changes. Once the proper permissions have been assigned, click "OK" to close the permissions window. If you have no further actions to perform while connected to your web host, disconnect from the host by clicking the "Disconnect" icon and close CuteFTP.

Tips & Warnings
  • For assistance connecting to the remote server, consult your CuteFTP manual or documentation provided by your web host.
  • Use caution when allowing public access to write to or execute a file, as these permissions will allow any visitor to your website to modify the applicable file.
