Hang your saddle

Hanging your saddle up on a saddle rack after each use is beneficial for several reasons. It allows air to circulate under the saddle, helping to dry the padding after each use. It also helps to maintain the proper shape of the saddle and prevents rodents or pets from chewing on the leather and padding. Additionally, hanging your saddle up on a saddle rack will help your saddle stay cleaner. Follow these steps for constructing your own rack.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-4-feet boards
  • One 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-2-feet board
  • Three 1-inch corner brackets
  • Two 3-inch screws
  • 12 1-inch screws
  • Six 2.5-inch nails
  1. Step 1

Angle both ends of one of the 4-foot long boards at 90-degrees as it will be the support board for the hanging saddle rack. It will also connect to the board that will attach to the wall and the board that will hold the saddle.

  2. Step 2

Nail the other 4-foot long board to the 2-foot long board by hammering two of the 2.5-inch nails through one end of the 4-foot board into one end of the 2-foot board. This will create an L-shape.

  3. Step 3

Screw one corner bracket into the 90-degree angle of the L-shape using two 1-inch screws on each side of the bracket connecting both boards.

  4. Step 4

Attach the 4-foot board with the angled ends now to the other two boards using two or three 2-inch screws in each end creating a triangle. Sand the end that will stick out towards you using the sandpaper now if you want--this is optional. However, it may help to prevent slivers when getting your saddle down or returning it.

  5. Step 5

Hang the saddle rack to the wall by screwing the 3-inch screws through the 2-foot long board. The 4-foot board without the angled ends should be on top and level so it will hold your saddle. The board with the angled ends provides additional support to prevent sagging from the weight of a heavy saddle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cover your saddle to keep dust and bird droppings from collecting on it with a thin sheet or purchase a saddle cover. Cover the board where your saddle will sit with a felt material if desired using glue and wrapping the material tightly around the board.
  • When hanging your saddle rack remember that you have to lift your saddle onto it and if it is too high, you may injure your back.
