How to Change an Auto Thermostat
Thermostats are the valves in the coolant system of automobiles that control the flow of water/coolant throughout the engine. To ensure that the engine runs efficiently, the coolant is not allowed to circulate until the engine's internal temperature reaches a certain level. Once the set level is reached, the thermostat valve opens and allows the coolant to circulate and maintain the set running temperature of the engine. Sometimes thermostats will fail by either sticking open or sticking shut, and therefore will need replaced to avoid damage to the engine's internals.
Check the auto manual for your car to determine where the thermostat is located. Normally the thermostat will be located under a cover next to the engine intake for coolant or in the top of the radiator, under the radiator cap. Sometimes it is within the radiator itself.
Things You'll Need
- Auto manual for your car
- New thermostat
- Flathead screwdriver
- Socket set
Instructions
-
Under the Radiator Cap
-
1
Unscrew the radiator cap and locate the thermostat underneath.
-
2
Twist the thermostat counter clockwise and pull upward to remove the thermostat.
-
-
3
Place the new thermostat in the radiator. Tighten it down clockwise. Then replace the radiator cap.
-
4
Start the car up and allow it to heat to running temperature, according to the owner's manual. Determine if the car is heating/running properly by observing the in-dash temperature gauges.
Inside the Radiator
-
5
Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator and unscrew it. Allow the radiator fluid to drain out into a waste container.
-
6
Use the flathead screwdriver to loosen and remove the hose clamp on the hose entering the engine.
-
7
Pull the hose off and use the socket set to remove the cover underneath.
-
8
Pull the thermostat out after the cover is removed and replace with the new thermostat.
-
9
Replace the cover. Reinstall the coolant hose and refill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant.
-
10
Start the car up and allow it to heat to running temperature, according to the owner's manual. Determine if the car is heating/running properly by observing the in-dash temperature gauges.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to pay careful attention to the way that the old thermostat was installed, and install the new one in the same direction. Installing it backwards could lead to a variety of problems for the engine.
