How to Wear an Army Combat Uniform
As any soldier in the U.S. Army learns, the army combat uniform is an important symbol as well as essential functional gear for the tasks ahead. Put on your army combat trousers and tuck the T-shirt in.

Put on a pair of army-issued black or green socks and combat boots.

Tuck the trousers into the top of the boots or cinch the trousers tight at the ankles by pulling on the drawstring cord.

Wear your army jacket zipped up, with the name and rank tags taped just above each of the chest pocket flaps.

Fold the jacket's mandarin collar downward so that the tips point to the ground and the top of the T-shirt is visible under the jacket. The collar should be worn up while wearing a combat vest over the jacket, however.

Wear the camouflage patrol cap in field situations or the black beret in barracks environments, unless otherwise directed by a commander. Both hats should be worn snugly on the head so that the interior band makes a straight line around the top of the head.

Soldiers may wear up to five different skill badges on the exterior of their army combat uniform coat. The army combat uniform is meant to fit loosely and comfortably and should not be altered to change this look. Keep the uniform care manual handy when you are first learning how to launder your army clothing.
Do not dry clean, steam press, or starch an army combat uniform, as this can adversely affect the durability of the specially made clothing. Do not wear your combat uniform at off-post businesses that mainly serve and sell alcohol, as this is against U.S. Army policy.
