How to Draw a Dress Form

How to Draw a Dress Form thumbnail
A dress-form drawing.

A fashion designer can't always count on someone being available to model their clothing whenever creativity hits. So, a dress form is often used to represent the human body. The average dress form is expandable from size two to size 16, and it's set upon a stand that can be raised or lowered to represent the desired height. If you are interested in making your own clothing designs, you may want to begin by sketching your fashions on a dress-form template. Once you have drawn the dress form, you can make extra copies so you have them on hand when fashion inspiration strikes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by drawing the bottom half of the dress form's skirt. On a standard dress form, the skirt bottom represents the area just above the knee and extends up above the hips to the bottom of the waist.

    • 2

Next, draw the upper torso area of the dress form. This part of the dress form represents the remainder of the waist up and the width of the bosom up to the top of the shoulders.

    • 3

Fill in the neckline that connects the shoulders of the dress form. The neckline on this dress form represents a standard crew neck. Take liberties with the necklines when you are designing your fashions. Plunging necklines and higher turtle necks can all be compensated for when you create your designs.

    • 4

Draw the pole that the dress form stands on. To create straight lines, you may want to use a ruler. You can adjust the length of the pole to fit your needs.

    • 5

Create the stand that the pole stands on by drawing legs on both sides. The stand for this dress form is very basic. You can make yours a bit fancier if you choose to do so.

    • 6

Finally, add the feet to both sides of the sand. You can also take liberties in designing the feet. You can dress them up by making them whatever shape you like.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are first beginning to draw, use a pencil so that you can easily make corrections. Afterward, use a marker to make your lines bolder.

  • If you are designing for fashion sizes that are larger than the standard, feel free to alter the drawing as you see fit. But remember to keep proportions in mind.
