How to Make Iron-on Transfer Paper

Printed T-shirts, totes and more are all the rage right now. You can print designs of your choosing using commercially available iron-on transfers or you can create your own designs using iron-on transfer paper you make. These iron-on transfer designs can be use to make gifts, personalize your clothing and so much more. Here is how to make iron-on transfer paper.

Things You'll Need:

  • Printer
  • Iron-on transfer paper
  • Design
  1. Step 1

    Purchase a pack of iron-on transfer paper at your local hobby center, office supply store or site such as Amazon (see resources). A number of companies make iron-on transfer paper including HP, Epson and Strathmore. Select a paper that is appropriate for your printer. If you have a laser printer, purchase iron-on transfer paper for a laser paper. Purchase iron-on transfer inkjet paper for an inkjet printer.

  2. Step 2

    Create your iron-on design using a computer graphics program, a scanned image or use commercial iron-on transfer designs. There are many free iron-on transfer designs available on the Internet (see resources for several).

  3. Step 3

    Print a test of your image to see if the design is satisfactory, using regular computer paper.

  4. Step 4

    Load the iron-on transfer paper so the correct side will be printed on. This will depend on your computer printer. Print the design on the iron-on transfer paper.

  5. Step 5

    Allow the printed transfer paper to completely dry before using.
