Things You'll Need:
- Experience teaching math
- Ideas for how to teach math concepts
-
Step 1
Prepare a math-oriented resume. If you were (or are) a fourth-grade teacher, for example, make sure to focus on your math experiences in this resume. New graduates can even list math classes taken and/or high scores on math exams. If you include references, make sure those references know about your math skills.
-
Step 2
Apply to a local learning center. If you have (or have had) a teaching certificate or a degree in math, you can apply to a tutoring center. Some national centers include Huntington, Sylvan, KnowledgePoints and Kumon. Call each of your local centers to find out its tutor requirements; if you fit the bill, send in your resume and cover letter as soon as possible.
-
Step 3
Try a test preparation center. If you had high math scores on the SAT or ACT or a degree in math, you can apply to tutor high school students for those exams. Kaplan Test Prep and the Princeton Review are two testing centers to try.
-
Step 4
Strike out on your own. This is especially effective if you have been teaching already. Post fliers at your local library, schools and grocery stores that advertise your skills. Write an ad for Craigslist. Let everyone you know that you're available for tutoring.
-
Step 5
Go online. You can apply to tutor online for a company like Tutor or Ehomework Help, or you can apply to get real-life tutoring jobs through a company like Tutor Nation.
