Cut a hole in a glass bottle and create a hanging display.

Drilling a hole in a glass bottle involves a basic knowledge of glasswork and the physical ability to work with power tools. A wide array of decorative projects can be created by working with glass bottles. A glass bottle with a hole drilled into the top or side allows easy hanging on walls or ceilings. Candles can be inserted into the hanging bottle, creating low-cost and romantic outdoor lighting displays.

Instructions

    • 1
Create a tropical display with hanging glass bottles.

Mark drilling area on the bottle with a permanent marker.

    • 2

Put on the protective eyewear and gloves.

    • 3

Run water off the hole area to reduce friction during the drilling process. Heat and friction cause glass to shatter or crack.

    • 4

Drill at low speed to start the hole.

    • 5

Spray additional water as needed to keep glass cool while drilling.

    • 6

Drill at low to medium speed to cut through the glass.

    • 7

Dump glass fragments from the inside of the bottle into the trash.

    • 8

Rub sandpaper around hole opening until the area is smooth to the touch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful not to use too large of a drill bit to cut the hole into the glass bottle. Home improvement store staff can aid in the selection of the proper size drill bit for the project size.
