How to Make Lanterns
Lanterns can easily be made from small jars, fine gauge wire and a small votive candle. They take only a few minutes each, and can provide a source of light, both indoors and out. They make great gifts, and the outside of the jar can be decorated to create a personal look for each lantern.

1
Use wire cutters to cut a 24-inch piece of fine gauge metal wire. Wrap the wire around the jar, just below the lip.
-
2
Use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to twist the two ends of the wire together. It should be tight enough that the wire won't slip off, but loose enough that the handle can slip underneath the wire.

3
Snip off the excess wire at the point where the two ends meet, using the wire cutters. Cut another piece of wire 12 inches long.
-
4
Use the needle-nosed pliers to wrap one end of the short wire around the wire encircling the lip. Bring the wire in an arc over the top of the jar and attach the other end of the wire to the lip wire opposite where the first is connected. This will create an arch-shaped handle.

Place a small votive candle inside the jar. Hang the jar from a branch or a similar object. Ensure what it's hanging from is not likely to catch fire from the small flame. Light the candle and enjoy the lantern.

Tips & Warnings
Make several lanterns to hang around an outdoors event to provide light and an aesthetically appealing atmosphere. Use scented candles to add aroma to the lanterns. Match them with the season to produce eye-catching decorations.
Keep an eye on the lantern. While it is not likely to catch fire, there is always a chance of it happening, especially when hanging from a small, dry branch. Never leave a lantern burning unattended. Never hold the lanterns by the wire after it has been lit. The wire will heat up quickly. Use a small hook to transport them after lighting.
