Commercial cleaning kits are available at sporting goods stores, but some standard household items and inexpensive hardware-store products will do the trick without emptying the wallet.

  • Water
  • Nonabrasive cleaning cloths
  • CLR -- cleaning solution commonly found in gallon containers at hardware stores.
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Saddle soap
  • Towel

      Rub the clubs with lukewarm water and a soft cloth to remove general dirt and grime.

      Soak the cleaning cloth in CLR. Thoroughly and firmly rub each golf club shaft with the cloth. Air-dry the clubs for at least an hour at room temperature. Repeat the process if persistent rust remains on the clubs.

      Mix liquid laundry detergent, soak the cloth in the mixture and scrub the rubber grips and ends.

      Scrub the leather grips softly with lukewarm saddle soap cleaner.
