Things You'll Need:
- Clicker
- Treats
- Another dog
-
Step 1
Attach the clicker to your shirt or keep it in your pocket. If you don't have it handy, you won't be able to train your dog.
-
Step 2
Have someone knock on your front door to stimulate your dog to bark.
-
Step 3
Press the clicker as soon as your dog begins to bark and watch its reaction. It will immediately stop barking and look at you.
-
Step 4
Give your dog a treat when it stops barking. Praise it and tell it that it is is a good dog. This lets the dog know that it did something right. It won't be long before it connects the "no barking" with the praise.
-
Step 5
Ask someone to knock on your door again. If your dog barks, quickly use the clicker. The dog should stop barking and you can then give it a treat and some praise.
-
Step 6
Continue the knocking and using the clicker until the dog sits calmly and quietly when someone knocks on the door.
-
Step 7
Move on to other situations that might cause your dog to bark, such as coming across another dog while outside.
-
Step 8
Have a friend walk her dog by yours. As soon as your dog begins to bark, use the clicker. Give your dog a treat and some praise when it stops barking.
-
Step 9
Repeat your friend walking by with her dog. Keep using the clicker and treats until the dog stops barking when your friend walks by with her dog.
-
Step 10
Stay consistent and train in 10-minute increments. Any longer and your dog will become frustrated. It may take your dog a few days to understand that his barking needs to stop, but once the dog gets it he will remember it for life.
