      Activate your product key. Once you purchase Windows Live OneCare software, you will be given a product key to get started with your subscription. You will find the link for this on the Windows Live OneCare homepage.

      Install Windows Live OneCare for XP. Your version of XP must meet certain criteria for installation to be successful. You must have the Service Pack 2 installed with XP, 300 MHz minimum PC speed, 256 mb of RAM, a broadband Internet connection and an available storage device for file backup. All anti-virus programs must be uninstalled as well.

      Resolve any issues reported on your taskbar. Your OneCare status will be color coded. Green means your PC is fine, while yellow or red indicates a problem that needs to be resolved. Click on the "Status" button, and Windows Live OneCare will open a wizard window to help you resolve the issue.

      Run the backup program from your taskbar on Windows Live OneCare. The program will scan all of the files on your computer. Choose the files that you want to protect from the populated list. Choose the storage device where you want to place all of these protected files, such as a blank CD, USB flash drive or zip drive. The next time you want to back up, the program will locate only newer files and not the ones you have already saved.
