Broomstick skirts aren't difficult to make and they require little work. They look cute in the summer with a tank top and sandals, or dress them up for winter with a sweater and boots. They are comfortable to wear and give plenty of leg room. Making your own skirts is a cheap alternative to buying, because you can make them for a lot less than store-bought.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Lay out the fabric, and cut out six panels on the fold. The panels should be 10 inches wide by 33 inches in length. You can cut several panels at a time by folding the fabric several times, just be sure there are no wrinkles in the fabric.

  2. Step 2

Pin panels side by side in three-panel blocks. You should now have two large panels, serving as front and back. Do not serge the last two remaining sides.

  3. Step 3

Take the bias tape out of its package and pin it to the waist portion of the skirt. This is the smaller circumference portion of the skirt. Pin the bias tape to the waist so that the tape forms a tube. Either hand or machine sew with a straight stitch as close to the bottom of the tube as possible. Insert the elastic through the tube, and cut the elastic to your waist measurement. Secure the ends of elastic with a pin.

  4. Step 4

Serge the skirt closed, but leave several inches open where the waist band is. Take the standard sewing machine, and sew the elastic into the waist band, stretching the elastic while sewing, and then sew the gap near the waist band shut. This will create a stretchy waistband that you do not adjust to size.

  5. Step 5

Hem the bottom of the skirt. Wash the skirt in cold water, and twist the skirt tightly so that the skirt is completely twisted, as tightly as you can comfortable manage. Wrap the twisted skirt around a hanger or clothes line, and allow to dry, repeat each time you wash the skirt.
