Auger bits are drill bits used to drill larger holes into lumber. The drilling speed of auger bits is quicker than using bit shanks. The bits range in sizes from 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches. The lengths of auger bits range from 8 inches to 24 inches. When using auger bits, it is wise to use a drill that has torque control for easier handling. Dulled auger bits are fairly expensive to replace, so using a small hand file to quickly sharpen these bits will help you save money and drilling time. Follow these steps.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Auger bits
  • Small hand file
  1. Step 1

Place the auger bit so that the tip is easily accessible for filing. Holding the auger bit in a clamp will help keep the drill bit in place for filing.

  2. Step 2

Place the face of the small file against the cutting edge lip of the auger bit. The file should be placed on the bit so that the inside edge of the cutting lip, not the outside edge, is being filed. Next, slide the file across the edge of the cutting edge with medium presser until it is sharpened.

  3. Step 3

Place the file against the inside edge of the spur/nib located at the tip of the auger bit. The spur/nib is the twisted cutting edge of the auger bit. Slide the file across the spur/nib with medium pressure until it is sharpened.

  4. Step 4

Follow the above steps for the rest of your auger bits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase a file that is thin enough to fit inside the auger tips so that filing may be done. A thin triangle file is recommended.
