How to Make Leg Warmers From Socks

Leg warmers generally cover your legs from slightly below the knees to right above the ankles. Some leg warmers may be particularly high and reach up to your thighs. Generally, leg warmers are made from cotton, though they can also be made from various synthetic fibers. Originally popular in the 1980s aerobics craze, nowadays leg warmers are worn for both practical and aesthetic reasons. While you can purchase leg warmers in a variety of stores, you can also make your own quite easily using socks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pair of socks to use for your leg warmers. Opt for knee-length or thigh-high socks. If you choose shorter socks, they won't be long enough to serve as leg warmers.

    • 2

Turn one sock inside out and lay it out on a flat surface.

    • 3

Cut the foot of the sock off, using sharp scissors. You should cut just above the sock's heel.

    • 4

Hem the cut end of the sock. Tuck the end in and sew the hem, using a needle and thread. If you don't hem the cut end, it will eventually unravel, particularly when you wash your new leg warmers.

    • 5

Repeat the same procedure on the other sock. You now have two leg warmers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose socks in bright, vibrant colors and prints for fun, fashionable leg warmers. Decorate your leg warmers. Turn the socks right-side in so the hems on the cut ends are not visible. You can now sew designs onto your new leg warmers. You can also affix buttons, bows or ribbons to the leg warmers via fabric glue.
