10 Foot Black Bullwhip

The bullwhip was an agricultural tool traditionally used to herd animals. The crack of the whip would startle the herd, steering it where the herdsman or rancher wanted it to go. It was seldom used against an animal directly, as the whip could break the skin, cause an infection and ultimately kill the animal. The bullwhip is now relegated to showmanship and spectacle. Successful use of the whip requires time-intensive practice and patience.

Instructions

    • 1

The most effective grip for the bullwhip requires placing the thumb in line with the handle. Where the thumb points, the whip will travel.

    • 2

Cock the bullwhip, extending the length of the whip behind you. Be sure there are no obstacles that could potentially interrupt the path of the moving whip.

    • 3

Bring the whip forward, pointing the thumb in the desired direction. This needs to be a relaxed, fluid motion. The more fluid the casting motion, the better the likelihood of making the whip crack.

    • 4

Once the whip is fully extended, retrieve the whip by cocking the arm back and to the side, away from your body and your head. Many whip injuries occur during the retrieval.

    • 5

Once recocked, the whip can be cast by moving the handle around the head and down. The overhead cast is more advanced and should only be performed once the standard cast has been mastered.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use gloves to prevent callouses from forming on the palms of your hands.

  • A bullwhip can cut and bruise flesh. Be mindful and concentrate.
