How to Clean the Coils on a Window Air Conditioner
When the coils on a window air conditioner become dusty and dirty, the unit is more prone to maintenance problems and will not run as efficiently. The coils should be cleaned before using it for the first time in the summer and again at the end of the season. It is not difficult to clean the indoor coils and these can be vacuumed out monthly. The outdoor coils are slightly more complicated, but the benefits are well worth the work. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum with brush attachment
- Soft bristle brush
- Spray bottle
- Towel
- Hose

Indoor Coils

Remove the front cover from the air conditioner unit. This should just slide off. Remove the filter and set aside.

Vacuum the loose dust from the coils with the brush attachment. The aluminum coils can bend easily, so be gentle.

Spray the coils with the water and wipe them down gently. Use the soft bristle brush on any areas that do not easily wipe clean to scrub the grime off. Replace the filter and cover.
Outdoor Coils

Remove the unit from the window and set down on a sturdy surface such as the driveway. Follow the manufacturer's directions for removing the metal cover and set aside. Removing the cover usually requires unscrewing a few screws. Set them aside in a safe place so you do not misplace them.

Use the garden hose to spray down the outside coils. Wipe away any excess dirt and dust on the outer coils with a towel.

Carefully reach between the coils to clean the side that would be facing into the room. Be careful not to bend them.

Allow the air conditioner to dry completely before reattaching the cover. Replace in the window.

Tips & Warnings
Replace the filter when you clean the interior coils. You can also rinse the filter clean and allow to dry between replacements.
Unplug the unit before cleaning.
