How to Install HP Notebook Memory

Hewlett Packard (HP) notebooks come in a variety of sizes and configurations, customizable to meet a user's individual needs. Over the course of your laptop's lifetime, you may find it necessary to install a new memory module, whether to improve system performance or to replace a faulty component. HP notebooks are designed such that the memory module bay is easy to access, allowing users to install modules without the aid of a technician.

Instructions

  1. Installation

    • 1

Save any open documents and exit all active applications. Turn off your laptop. Disconnect the power cord and any peripheral devices. Close the display and turn the laptop over.

    • 2

Locate the battery release latch; slide the latch and remove the battery from the battery bay (some models may require you to slide a battery release locking latch in addition to the release latch). Set the battery aside.

    • 3

Locate the memory module cover. Loosen the screw securing the cover in place (with some models, you may not have to remove the screw completely). Lift the edge of the cover nearest the screw hole and free the tabbed edge from the laptop base. Set the cover aside.

    • 4

Locate an empty memory module connector (if necessary, remove an existing RAM module by first spreading apart the clips at each edge of the module, then sliding the module out of the connector). Align the RAM module with the connector; insert the module at a 30-degree angle. Apply pressure until the module is fully seated. Push the top of the module down until the metal clips lock it into place.

    • 5

Replace the memory module cover (insert the tabbed end first, then lower the edge with the screw hole). Use the previously loosened screw to secure the memory module cover in place.

    • 6

Reinsert the battery into the battery bay. Return the laptop to an upright position. Reconnect the power cord and any previously disconnected cables. Installation is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase memory modules for your HP laptop directly from the manufacturer's website. See the "Resources" section for a link. If you are replacing an existing memory module, store the old memory module in the same packaging that your new module came in and save it as a backup component.

  • Do not touch the contacts on your memory module during installation; always grip the module by its plastic edges. Prior to installation, ground yourself by touching a nearby metal surface, such as the rear panel of the laptop.
