The Java Virtual Machine allows you to run Java applets and applications on Windows XP Sp2. Many websites have Java applets embedded for added functionality. You will be prompted to install the Java VM to view and use these applets. Certain programs in Windows XP Sp2 also require the Java VM to work correctly. It is easy to use, is unobtrusive and runs in the background, and uses little memory.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Java Virtual Machine (See Resources)
  1. Step 1

Download Java VM for Windows XP (see Resources). If you want to use the online download, choose the first download option under "Windows." If you want to save the file to install later, choose the second download option under "Windows."

  2. Step 2

Close all running programs and browser windows. These can conflict with the installation.

  3. Step 3

Double-click the file you just downloaded to begin the installation wizard.

  4. Step 4

Press "Accept" to agree to the license agreement.

  5. Step 5

Choose which third party software to install, if any. Check the boxes next to the software name to install. Uncheck the boxes to prevent third party software installation. Press "Next" after each third party software screen to save your choice and continue. You don't have to install any third party software for the Java VM to work correctly.

  6. Step 6

Allow the installer to complete the installation. Click "Finish" when prompted.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose the offline installation if you have dial-up or want to install the Java VM on multiple computers without the need to download the program multiple times.
  • Download the Java Virtual Machine only from Java.com to ensure you don't install a virus or older version of the program.
