Step 1
Measure the wall height were the awning is to be installed. The requirement is 7 feet 6 inches from the floor of the patio or deck to the bottom of any overhang, roof or eve on the house.

Measure the width of the wall for your awning. Awnings come in measurements from 10 to 18 feet, in 1-foot increments. One exception is that the 10-foot awning measures 123 inches, whereas the others measure their exact size--that is, a 12-foot awning measures 12 feet. Also measure between the railings on your deck or patio to make sure the awning support arms will fit inside the railings.

Step 3
Measure at least 8 inches on each side of the house where the awning will attach. This 8 inches should contain no obstructions so the awning can fit snugly against the house.

These awnings can be installed up to 10 feet off the patio or deck floor.
