Becoming a real estate agent is an attractive career for people who need some measure of flexibility in their work schedules. As a real estate agent, you can show homes and tackle paperwork while still attending to other obligations you may have. If you are an Arkansas resident, you will want to become familiar with the State of Arkansas Real Estate Commission, an agency that oversees the requirements necessary to become a licensed real estate agent.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Real estate education classes
  • Testing and licensing fees
  • Background check
  1. Step 1

Be a legal adult of at least 18 years of age to become a real estate agent in Arkansas.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Arkansas Real Estate Commission (AREC) website's education section to find a list of real estate schools throughout Arkansas that provide pre-license coursework (see link in Resources). Sixty hours of real estate coursework is required to sit for the licensing exam.

  3. Step 3

Apply to take the real estate license exam at a testing location in Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee or Texas, depending on where in the state you are located. AREC offers a Candidate Handbook that contains in-depth details about the licensing exam, testing procedures and includes an application (see Resources).

  4. Step 4

Be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars to apply and sit for your Arkansas licensing exam, as well as any advanced, specialized licenses you may want to obtain, such as the real estate broker license. Exact fees and methods of payment will be noted on your application forms.

  5. Step 5

Submit to a background check, if necessary. Most applicants for real estate licensure are checked by AREC to ensure they are law-abiding citizens of Arkansas.

  6. Step 6

Keep your license current by renewing it every year. You may elect to hold your license in inactive status if you are not practicing real estate for a specified period of time. To keep your license active, you must have six hours of continuing education credits.
