Things You'll Need:
- Yarn (similar weight to the sweater yarn)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
-
Step 1
Turn the sweater inside out and spread it out on a flat work surface.
-
Step 2
Thread your yarn needle with your yarn and insert it into the sweater approximately 1/2 inch away from the hole on one edge.
-
Step 3
Stitch a running stitch along the entire length of the hole, and then continue the running stitch another 1/2 inch beyond the hole.
-
Step 4
Sew another line of running stitches even with the first line of running stitches, sewing back to the side you started on. The second line of running stitches should be made right next to the first line, with the stitches neat and even.
-
Step 5
Continue sewing lines of running stitches in this fashion across the hole of the sweater. When you reach the hole, simply stretch the yarn across the hole and then stitch a few more running stitches on the other side of the hole.
-
Step 6
Turn around and sew back again, stretching the yarn over the hole again. Do not pull the yarn too tightly across the hole.
-
Step 7
Continue sewing lines of running stitches until the hole is covered and there is a 1/2-inch stitching border on each side of the hole.
-
Step 8
Turn the sweater 90 degrees and begin sewing a line of running stitches across the running stitches already sewn.
-
Step 9
Sew a running stitch back in the opposite direction when you reach the end of your sewing. Repeat lines of running stitch in the same fashion.
-
Step 10
Weave the yarn through the yarn stretched across the hole when you reach the hole in the sweater. Take your needle over one yarn and under the next until you are past the hole. Continue a few running stitches, and turn around and sew back again in the same fashion.
-
Step 11
Tie a knot and clip the yarn when you are finished sewing the lines of running stitches and the hole has been repaired.
-
Step 12
Turn the sweater right side out again and clip any yarn ends from the sweater yarn that are protruding from the darned area.
