How to Check for Hormonal Imbalances

A hormonal imbalance is a condition that affects the hormone level in a person's body. It may be caused by a glandular problem, an ovulatory disorder, abnormalities of the cervix or testes, menopause, aging or a medical condition, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome.

    • 1

Assess the symptoms that have led you to believe you are suffering a hormonal imbalance. This would include vaginal dryness, irregular or cessation in periods, frequent urination or bladder infections, impotence, change (loss) in libido, tender breasts, headaches, unexplained weight gain, hot flashes and even depression. These are the most common symptoms of a hormonal imbalance.

    • 2

Track your sleeping patterns. Many women (and some men) who are experiencing hormonal imbalances will experience a change in their sleeping patterns. It may manifest as restlessness, insomnia (difficulty getting to sleep or remaining asleep) or night sweats.

    • 3

Invest in a hormone balance test kit. These simple-to-use kits for at-home testing can indicate whether or not you're suffering from a hormonal imbalance. They cost anywhere from $30 to $240 and can be used by either women or men (the product will indicate for which sex it should be used).

Tips & Warnings

  • Most hormonal imbalances are a result of too little estrogen or too much progesterone for women, or a fluctuation in testosterone production for men. Ask your doctor before treating any hormonal imbalance with an over-the-counter medication or supplement. Your symptoms may be an indication of a hormone imbalance, or they may be a sign of a more serious health condition.
