Getting through airport security doesn't have to be stressful as long as you are prepared. The Transportation Security Administration or TSA has a set of guidelines that will assist you in getting through security without any surprises. Knowing what documents you will need and which items that are required for removal during screening, will help you know what to expect when passing through security. The following steps will help you get through security prepared and without stress so you can enjoy the rest of your journey.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have your boarding pass and government-issued ID out and ready. Your government-issued ID should have your name, date of birth, gender, expiration date, and a tamper-resistant seal. Government-issued Id's can be passports, driver's licenses, military Id's' or trusted traveler cards. Keep your boarding pass out all the way through the screening process.

  2. Step 2

When carrying liquids, make sure you put them in three ounce bottles. Put your liquid bottles and other toiletries under three ounces in a clear plastic bag that is one quart in size. Each passenger can have one bag to be placed separately in a bin to be x-rayed. If you need to carry liquids that are more than three ounces, then check them.

  3. Step 3

If you have any electronics such as laptop computers, DVD players, or cameras; they need to be taken out of your bag and case, and put separately in a security bin for screening.

  4. Step 4

Remove outer wear such as jackets, blazers, or anything bulky. Shoes, belts, coins, or any other metal objects need to be removed before going through security. If you don't remove any items that could potentially go off during screening, you can be subjected to additional screening by a security wand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't wrap your gifts. Wait until you get to your destination.
  • Show up on time and early if you can. The recommended time to arrive at the airport is two hours before your flight.
  • Exempt carry on liquids are baby formula and liquids required for medical conditions.
  • Undeveloped film can be ruined during screening, so put the film in your checked luggage.
  • If you don't adhere to TSA liquid requirements, your items will be confiscated.
  • Don't make threats or act unruly during your screening process because it could cause you to miss your flight.
