There are a number of ways to make classroom seating charts. Computer programs can be utilized or a hand drawn diagram can be filled in. The problem with both of these is the effort required to change them. This alternative creates an easy classroom seating chart.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • small post it notes (1.5" x 2")
  • pen or pencil
  • scissors
  • stapler
  1. Step 1

Cut the small post-it notes in half. This allows more chairs to be added to the seating chart. Depending on configuration, approximately thirty students should fit on each sheet.

  2. Step 2

Arrange the post-it notes on a blank sheet of paper to match the desk arrangement in the room.

  3. Step 3

Use the class roster to write the names of the students on the seating chart.

  4. Step 4

Have students sit in assigned seats and verify that a student’s given name is what he or she prefers to be called. Add nicknames to seating chart as needed.

  5. Step 5

Repeat for all class periods. Label the sheets with class period in upper right corner. Staple sheets together in upper left corner.

Tips & Warnings
  • As students are added or removed to the roster throughout the year, remove old post-its and add new ones.
  • Make a copy for substitute teachers to use. Give them the copy to ensure original arrangement is not disturbed.
  • The same method can be used for any seating chart purpose.
