One of the things that hangs a cloud over an otherwise beautiful summer day is fruit-flies/ gnats in the kitchen. If you have bananas and seasonal fruits on the counter or table, you will inevitably have to deal with fruit-flies. This little trick is an easy way to deal with the little buggers without using harmful chemicals or unsightly fly strips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find a clean jar, cup, bowl (really just about any vessel will work). Maybe try to use something pretty, so it will look nice sitting by your fruit?

  2. Step 2

Pour about 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar in the cup.

  3. Step 3

Add three drops of dish soap to the vinegar.

  4. Step 4

    Cover cup with plastic wrap.

  5. Step 5

Using the toothpick, poke holes in the plastic wrap.

  6. Step 6

If you have a rubber band, use it to secure the plastic wrap to the glass a little better.

  7. Step 7

Put the finished product in a place that the fruit-flies/gnats already frequent. They will smell the apple cider vinegar, think it is food and dive into the cup. When they hit the surface, they will drown, because of the dish soap. The dish soap makes the vinegar slippery.

  8. Step 8

When the cup is full of dead fruit-flies.... and trust me, within a few days or so... it will be, dump out and start over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to use apple cider vinegar. Do not use the regular white vinegar. The pests are not attracted to the white vinegar like they are to the apple cider vinegar.
