Determine what it is that you like to do? There may be several things. The main key to having a successful work from home business is starting a business that you like. If you like animals, you could start a pet sitting business or walk dogs for other people. Do you like running errands? You could run errands for people so they don't have to. Sit down and write out a list of things you enjoy, and incorporate those interests into your new business.

Set goals. Now that you know what kind of business you want to start, it's a good idea to write out goals you would like to achieve. You don't have to set out to be entrepreneur of the year, but maybe you'd like to have a certain amount of customers by the end of the year. Or maybe you'd like to be able to take some of your earnings and go on the vacation you've been planning. Write down your goals so you can be reminded of what you're aiming for. And when you've reached your goals, you can start a new list.

Don't get ahead of yourself. If you're going to start a jewelry making company, it's probably not a good idea to go to your local craft store and buy out their entire stock of beads. Start on a smaller scale so you don't end up owing yourself money. Remember, the goal is to make extra money, not owe extra money. Sure there may be some sort of investment required depending on what your business is, but just make sure that you don't get too over zealous with your initial spending.

Take breaks. When you start working from home, you will most definitely be tempted to work around the clock. After all, you are the boss and the employee. But you will start to see that working non stop can actually cause more damage than good. You will be a much more effective worker if you regularly take breaks and try not to constantly think about "what still has to be done." Keep reminding yourself that you will get everything done. It may not be in the time frame you were originally thinking, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Find what works. If your business isn't taking off the way you'd like, then make some changes. Readjust things until they're working for you. Remember, you want your business to work for you, not against you.
