This guide teaches you how to update a website through an FTP program called FileZilla.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Website host that supports FTP
  • Filezilla
  • Your Website
  1. Step 1

Once you install FileZilla, open it up.

  2. Step 2

Select your website’s folder in the Local Sites area of FileZilla as shown in the picture. This will make it easier to update individual files without adding another directory to the website.

  3. Step 3

Now you are going to connect to the FTP server to update the website. Find the menu bar which is located at the top of the FileZilla program and click File then Site Manager and a window should pop up on the screen just like the picture below.

  4. Step 4

Once the window pops up you’ll need to press the New Site button.

  5. Step 5

After clicking the New Site button, a little icon should appear below the New Sites folder saying New Site. The New Site word should be highlighted meaning it wants you to rename the site. Rename it something that relates to your website. Mine is DO BBall because I am creating a website for my school's Basketball team.

  6. Step 6

After renaming, you’ll see to the right is a list of information you will need to fill out. Make sure your setting are like this and all you'll need to do is fill in the Host, User, and Password areas. Make sure to log into the correct FTP server double check your information this is a vital step.

  7. Step 7

Now that you have all the information entered into your site you are going to need to press Connect in order to continue.

  8. Step 8

The Site Manager window will close after you connect and in the area that is outlined in orange in the picture. It will show the status of your connection to the FTP server. Make sure that after you connect. The area displays the words Directory listing successful and not something else that would be shown in Red. If so you entered something wrong. Go back to STEP 7

  9. Step 9

Now you’re going to need to locate your website’s directory on the server. In the Remote Site area which is outlined in Blue in the picture above. Your going to need to click the / folder until you come across your website’s folder. Once you have found the folder select it and in the area below which is outlined in Green according to the picture above. All the contents of the website will appear.

  10. Step 10

Now the final step, in the area outlined in Orange in the picture below which would be your Local Site. You want to highlight the files or folders you would like to update or upload to the website and right click them. Once they are right clicked a sub menu will pop up and there will be an option that says Upload. You will need to press that.

  11. Step 11

Congratulations, you’re done! You have successfully updated a website. Every time you need to add or update something to the website. All you will need to do is go to File > Site Manager and then click on the FTP server you want to connect to then press Connect. Once you press Connect just follow Steps 8-10 again.

    Thanks for Reading!
