How to Prepare to Pass the PMP Exam
The Project Management Professional credential is offered by the Project Management Institute to qualified management professionals. To be eligible to take the test to obtain the credential, you must have a four-year degree and at least three years of project management experience. That experience must include 4,500 hours of leading projects and 35 hours of project management education. You can also qualify by having a high-school diploma with five years of project management experience, including 7,500 hours of leading projects and 35 hours of project management education. The exam takes four hours.

Go to the Project Management Institute website and access the PMP Credential Handbook. Read through this document before continuing. It will include detailed instructions on how to register for the exam and the format of the test.

Access the online application for the PMP credential on the PMI website. Enter your work experience and schooling information. Pay the credential fee. PMI will process your application within five to 10 business days. If you are approved, you can then register for the exam. If you are selected for an audit, you will have to provide documentation of your experience and education before you can proceed in the exam process.

Go to the PMI website and access the PMP Examination Specification if you are taking the test before Aug. 31, 2011. If you are taking the test after Aug. 31, 2011, access the PMP Examination Content Outline. These documents will give you an overview of the topics covered on the test and the percentage of questions devoted to each topic. This will give you a good idea of what you need to study.

Use the sample questions available on the PMI website to test your knowledge and familiarize yourself with the format of the questions on the test.

Consider taking a course to prepare for the PMP exam. Look for a course that is offered by a PMI chapter or a Registered Education Provider. The course will cover all the topics on the exam.

Form a study group with other colleagues who are also taking the test. Quiz one another on the test topics. Help each other work through difficult questions.

Contact the testing center and register for a PMP certification exam. Identify the location of the testing center, items to bring, not to bring and the length of time. Arrive early to the test center.
