Things You'll Need:
- cyanuric acid
-
Step 1
Stabilizer or Cyanuric Acid protects the chlorine in a swimming pool from evaporation from the sun. It acts like sunscreen for the chlorine in the swimming pool. If the level is low, this product needs to be added. The ideal range in my experience is about 50 ppm. This is plenty to hold the chlorine but not high enough to create other issues in your swimming pool.
-
Step 2
Add this product through the skimmer right next to the swimming pool. It is a slow dissolving product if broadcast over the pool's surface, so it will just settle to the bottom. Pool stores sell it as conditioner, stabilizer, or cyanuric acid. They are all the same product that does the same thing.
-
Step 3
Once added, usually about 3 pounds at a time, it will turn into an oatmeal looking substance. Let it just dissolve. Make sure to wait at least 48 hours before backwashing or cleaning the swimming pool filters. Most of the stabilizer can take up to that long to reach the pool and start to take effect. You should notice that the chlorine level begins to hold and maintain itself.

Step 4
If the level is too high in a swimming pool, the only thing you can do is more frequent backwashing or drain some of the water out and refill with fresh water.
