Things You'll Need:
- Metal roofing, 1 1/2 woodt screws, 1x4 #2 pine if stripping
-
Step 1
First you will have to order your tin. It can be ordered in feet and inches and not in ½ inches. For example you can order a piece 6' 6” and not 6' 6 1/2”. It will take several days for your tin to come in. For roof applications it is recommend no more than a 3/12 pitch.
-
Step 2
Once your tin comes in and is delivered to your house it is time to get started.
-
Step 3
If you choose the 1x4 stripping you should get these in place first.
-
Step 4
If you are screwing into wood you will use a 1 ½ wood screw with washer, into metal you will use a 1 1/2” self taping screw with washer.
-
Step 5
When you begin to install the tin make sure you leave a 2" overhang at the end of each eve.
-
Step 6
You screw tin in the flat part next to the rib and not in the rib. You nail in the rib. Sounds backwards, but this is how it's done. See the picture to the left to see the rib I am speaking of. Make sure you don't pull to tight as this will indent your tin and cause it to be unsightly and you could end up with leaks. You will place your screws between 6”-10” apart.
-
Step 7
Make sure you don't skimp on the screws. This is important not just for warranty but for the wind that it must endure.
-
Step 8
You can save up to $1500.00 on your tax bill by installing a metal roof of certain colors. Check with the company you are ordering from to see if your color qualifies.
