Learn what to look for and ask when considering hiring a pony for your child's birthday party.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a prospective company to bring the pony to your house or party location. The best online sources are www.critterplaces.com and www.partypop.com Don't consider hiring your friend with a horse as they are not insured in the event of an accident.
Expect to pay from $150 to $200 an hour for one pony. One pony is usually enough for up to 12 children. If you need additional time or ponies the rate usually is less for the next hour or pony.

  2. Step 2

ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: How long have they been in business? Will they provide you with atleast 2 references of past clients? Are they properly insured? Are the ponies hand led or do they set up a pony ring? Do they provide a spot person if they are hand led or should you ask a parent to assist? What is the weight restriction of the children for riding the pony? How much space do they need? Do they clean up if there is a mess? Do they provide helmet's for the children.

  3. Step 3

WHERE TO HAVE YOUR PARTY: Most people have the party in a front or back yard. If you have a homeowners association don't forget to clear it with them. However, if you are considering a park or public place make sure you ask if they allow ponies. Also, they will probably ask for "proof of insurance." Ask if they just need a copy of the pony companies insurance certificate or if they need to be named insured on the policy. Some insurance companies charge the pony company for every certificate they have to issue. They may pass this charge on to you if they do. The charge could be from $25 - $200.

  4. Step 4

WHAT IF IT RAINS: Most companies have a rain policy. Some will reserve the right to cancel the party if it rains. This can be disastrous news to an excited 5 year old. Some companies will bring an umbrella or tent or even clear space in your garage. Be very careful before you sign a contract that gives them the right to cancel for any reason. Especially if they have taken a deposit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy theme party supplies like cowboy hats or cowboy bandannas from www.OrientalTrading.com
  • Play cowboy music
  • Have something for the children to do when it's not thier turn to ride. Or for children who are not interested in riding.
  • Simple face painting is fun and you may find a kit in a bookstore.
  • Ask the pony company if they can bring an extra pony saddle and hay bale for children to sit on if they don't like the "live" pony.
  • Get invitations at Vista Print (best deals)
