How to Get Your Goldfish to Spawn

Breeding your goldfish will require patience and most of the time, the spawning process will occur naturally while at times, it will need your intervention. Usually the key factor to ensure that they spawn is by providing quality diet especially one, which is rich in bloodworm, and another is the temperature control. Having live aquarium plants in the tank will also help but if this still doesn’t take place, then you might need to intervene.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 large aquarium tanks measuring at least 20 gallons, live aquarium plants, quality dry fish food pellets, supply of bloodworm, aquarium thermometer, tank chiller
  1. Step 1

First, separate out the males and females to individual tanks. Although, there is no clear and 100 percent accurate method to correctly identify which is male and which is female, so normally what I would do is to remove the goldfish with rounder body to another tank and the slim thinner fish to another. This will increase the chance of getting the right male and female separation.

  2. Step 2

Once they are moved to their own individual tanks (hopefully you are right on this one), introduce live feeds that comprise mainly bloodworm with a mix of dry pellets rich in vitamins as a supplement.

  3. Step 3

Goldfish usually thrive well in temperature ranging from 20 to 22 degree Celsius but in this special case, you will need to bring down the temperature lower using an aquarium chiller so that it goes down further until it reaches 18 degree Celsius.

  4. Step 4

Leave it as per it is with that condition for at least a week while at the same time ensure that they continue to get the good food. Do watch out on water quality so that it stays clean all the time.

  5. Step 5

When you are ready, remove the male goldfish from its tank and introduce it to the female tank. Slowly raise the temperature back again to 20 degree Celsius and if you do not notice the male showing any interest in the female and chasing her around, you could adjust another 2 degrees higher.

Tips & Warnings
  • Note: The temperature change is a natural occurrence that will induce spawning. Percent of success varies but usually this would work unless of course you have similar gender of goldfish.
