Step 1
One of the most common methods is to take an empty vase and add water. Then crush up an aspirin and add to the water. Do this before adding the flowers to the vase. Change the water every 2 days.
-
Step 2
If you do not have an aspirin substitute it with a multi-vitamin, copper penny or pinch of salt and baking soda.
-
Step 3
To keep cut flowers fresh longer and keep the water crystal clear use this recipe for vase water. Put 3 drops of bleach and 1 teaspoon of sugar into 1 liter of water.
-
Step 4
Don’t have any bleach on hand? Substitute the bleach with vodka, gin, pure grain or clear rum. This will prevent bacteria in the water.
-
Step 5
Try a bit of clear soda such as sprite or 7-up. Diet soda will not work. The acid and sugar in the soda provides a water level that will benefit cut flowers to best.
-
Step 6
To make fresh flowers appear fresher cut above the existing cut. First run the bottom of the stems under cool running water then proceed to cut them just a bit above the existing cut.
-
Step 7
Make sure to take a photo of the beautiful flower arrangement. Start a flower arrangement scrapbook!

on 4/30/2009 Great article! I always keep my flowers fresh with either a 7-up or a little sugar. I didn't know bleach would work. I thought that would be toxic, but then they are cut flowers... Thanks for the information!
