Step 1
Plan ahead. While you have your dog at home be sure that you have tags with ID fastened as security as possible. If your dog wears both a collar and a harness then you will need to duplicate those tags. This will ensure that ID stays on even if one of them comes off. Be sure to make use of any ID tags provided by your veterinarian or shelter.
-
Step 2
Keep images of your dog on hand. This way if you need to make a flyer you will be able to do so easily.
-
Step 3
Get out looking as soon as possible. The more time elapses the farther away your pet will get.
-
Step 4
Enlist as many bodies as you can to look. More people means more directions. Just be sure that you aren’t duplicating, give everyone a direction and go.
-
Step 5
Contact the local police. Most towns will send out a bulletin and alert animal control. That way if an officer spots your go they know where it belongs
-
Step 6
Contact your local shelters give them a description and contact information. If the dog comes in this will speed up return. Call daily to check, just in case.
-
Step 7
Make and put up fliers at pet stores, supermarkets and anywhere else people congregate. Be sure to include contact info.
