An employee evaluation can be a difficult task to do. It is an invaluable process for both the employee and the employer.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you set enough time aside for each evaluation. Usually 30-60 minutes is sufficient.

  2. Step 2

on a piece of paper have the employees job description clearly written out for them to read. Leave enough room under this description for comments.

  3. Step 3

Have the employee critique themselves on this same paper. You may find out that the employee may be harder on themselves then you were. But this will give light to some areas that may need improvement even if you weren't previously aware of.

  4. Step 4

make sure you ask questions. Don't just sit there doing all the talking.

  5. Step 5

Focus on the things that you believe need to be addressed. Do not just throw out blanket statements or group individuals into one collective body.

  6. Step 6

Be tough, but be fair. Listen to the arguments being made by the employee and address them one by one.

  7. Step 7

Always remain professional. Be ready for a bit of backlash especially if you are evaluating a substandard employee. Avoid getting into a yelling match at all costs. if you can not control the situation just send the employee outside the office for 5 minutes and then call them back in. you may have to give them this cool down period a couple times before they realize that the evaluation could go on all day if they don't get their attitude in check.
