Install Metal Roof Shingles

Metal shingles can come in a lot of different types like stainless steel, aluminum, copper and alloy. Each of them will affect the price, durability and the finish look of the project. Metal Roof Shingles are commonly used on flat roofs they are available for any pitch roof needed. This article will cover the basics needed for installing Metal Roof Shingles on a flat roof.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • saw with metal cut blade, tape measure,
  1. Step 1

The first step and most importation is the first roll, this would be started from the highest point of your flat roof. [note no roofs a 100% flat, they have at least a 1-12 pitch] Its very importation that it gets double flashing from the shingles on to the side wall then cap flashing on the top. The [L] flashing should be started off the metal shingles then work up the wall and then covered with [Z] flashing before being caped. This would also be the way it would done when the roof/slope runs along the a wall. Note: some flat roofs do not sit on the very top of the building/home they sit between the walls with a draining system in place others slope down one way [normaly to the back] to run water off the building.

  2. Step 2

Installing the rest of the shingles after the first roll is done with a drill and screws. [check your metal shingle manufacture for the requirements for screwing each one] You should install them one roll at a time, the chances of installing them and then running into install trouble or leaking trouble is very low. They come with a simple snap and go system making them very simple to install the right way.

  3. Step 3

Finishing up, depending on the type of shingle/materials you go with will result in how much finish work is left after running all the shingles. Some manufactures have pre-made channels for the sides and every other parts of the install requiring little to no finish work/flashing after the last one is in place. Others will require you to cap and flash all the edges like seen in the detail/picture in step one.
