Go Green & Save Green!
Go Green & Save Green!

Thanks to Thomas Edison for his amazing invention of the light bulb which has done many countless things for mankind and plants; however incandescent lights are hurting our planet and causing more damage then good. Incandescent bulbs use more energy to run and form heat you can feel and cause more wasted energy. The bulbs last about 1,000 hours, and that's only if they don't break first. So before purchase your next light bulb, here is how you can save energy using LED or fluorescent lights instead.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Stop Using Incandescent Bulbs
    Stop Using Incandescent Bulbs

Stop burning yourself on energy wasting inefficient incandescent bulbs. Light your home, workplace, and outdoors safer and smarter by using LED lights. The most energy efficient lights use light-emitting diodes instead of incandescent bulbs. A work light with 20 LEDs uses only 1.5 watts compared to a typical 60 watt incandescent bulb.

  2. Step 2
    Whiter Brighter Light
    Whiter Brighter Light

See, live, decorate, and work with whiter light. LED lights produce a whiter light than an incandescent bulb. This will allow you to see finer details too. LEDs last up to 50,000 hours vs incandescent bulbs last no more than 1,000 hours. Since 20 LEDs under a clear protective lens uses only 1.5 watts, they give off almost no heat at all. Change all the lights in your home, and if you can't afford to do them all at once, start by replacing the ones you use most often.

  3. Step 3
    Amazing LED Light
    Amazing LED Light

If you are having trouble selecting a bulb, there is a Geobulb which is an 8 watt LED light. This bulb is designed to replace the common 60 watt incandescent bulb. The Geobulb generates 800 lumens of light and can be found in either warm white light or cool light. This bulb will last 40 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb and 10 times longer than a compact fluorescent. These bulbs withstand cold temperatures extremely well too; great for outdoor coach lighting or post lights. The upfront price of this bulb may be a sticker shock for some, but knowing it will last 10 years or more makes it most cost and energy efficient bulb.

  4. Step 4
    Fluorescent Lights Save Too

Another option for a smarter work light is one that uses one or two fluorescent minitubes. This is a great option for those needing various styles. They come in long or compact. Comparable to the LED lights, fluorescent lights give off little heat too. Even the brightest fluorescent lights use only 13 watts of electricity to produce the same amount of light and brightness as the caged lighting. Fluorescent tubes do not have as long of a life as LED lights, and instead last up to 10,000 hours.

  5. Step 5
    Try Something Mobile
    Try Something Mobile

Are you on the go and need something mobile? Consider using a battery-operated LED work light with no cord. Black & Decker has one with 14 LEDs and operates on three AA batteries. These LEDs last up to 10,000 hours, and because LEDs are energy efficient the batteries will last long.

Tips & Warnings
  • Changing your everyday lighting, work lights, and the lights you decorate with will not only save you money on your electric bill, but it'll make less trips to the store to purchase and replace incandescent bulbs and it helps keep our planet safer. So go green and start changing your lighting to LED bulbs.
  • LED is short for Light Emitting Diode
  • LED's use 90% less energy then incandescent bulbs.
  • LED lights generate no heat and will not burn you if touched. Therefore safer for homes with young children.
