Remove the insoles from the tennis shoes (The insole is the soft padded material in the bottom of a shoe).

Cut the piece of wood into the same shape as the inside of the shoe. To do this, place the shoe on the piece of wood, and trace the outline of the footprint. Then, cut the traced piece out.

  3. Step 3
Hit The Nail Through The Shoe.

Take the nails and the hammer and drive the nails through the shoe from the inside through the bottom. The nail points should be pointing towards the ground. Place them in a pattern that will provide you with the best traction.

  4. Step 4
Place The Wood Inside The Shoe.

Place the cut piece of wood inside the shoe so it is on top of the nail heads. This is to prevent the nails from coming back through the shoe into your foot.

  5. Step 5
    Replace The Insoles

Replace the insole of the shoe. Put the insole on top of the wood. This will provide comfort.

  6. Step 6
    File The Sharp Nail Points.

Finally, take the metal file and dull the nail points. If they are too sharp, they will sink in to hard surfaces too much. Once complete, you will have your very own homemade baseball cleats!

Tips & Warnings
  • Look at a brand name baseball cleat and imitate the cleat pattern with your nails.
  • Experiment with different length nails to find the best fit for you.
  • You may want to use a shoe slightly larger than what you normally wear to accommodate the wood.
  • Use caution when working with the saw, nails, and metal file.
