How to Clean an HDTV Screen

Clean your HDTV screen carefully

In order to always enjoy a beautiful picture on your HDTV, you should clean the screen regularly. The screen produces static which tends to attract dust particles, and thus your TV screen is probably covered with a layer of dust. While it is not at all difficult to clean an HDTV screen, it is important to know how to do it right. An HDTV screen is a lot more delicate than that of a regular TV, and using household products to clean it, might permanently ruin it. Here is how to safely clean a an HDTV screen to make it look like new.

Things You'll Need

  • Micro fiber wipe
  • Alcohol free screen cleaner (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the HDTV and allow it to cool off for a few minutes. Never ever clean the screen with the TV on.

    • 2

Start by wiping the dust of the screen with a dry micro fiber cloth. If some dust remains, dampen the cloth slightly with water (a few drops is enough), and then gently wipe the screen again. Don't ever use terry cloth or paper towels to clean your HDTV screen. They tend to leave lint and, worse yet, can end up scratching your screen.
This is usually enough to clean any HDTV screen. If, however, there are some tougher spots on your HDTV, like your two-year old's fingerprints for instance, then go on to the next step.

To find the right cleaning product for your HDTV screen, it would best to check with the manufacturer. Whatever you do though, don't ever use household products like Windex or rubbing alcohol for cleaning your HDTV screen. Avoid any ammonia or alcohol based cleaners (even if they are designated screen cleaners) unless your manufacturer specifically recommends it. The chemicals in those cleaners can slowly erode the screen resulting in all kinds of streaks and spots.
If in doubt, look for Monster's alcohol free cleaner (shown in the picture), which is safe for all screens.

Spray some of the screen cleaner onto the micro fiber wipe (don't ever spray any product directly onto the screen!) and wipe the screen gently. If needed, you can scrub the toughest spots, but do it gently and don't press too hard.
