From these step-by-step instructions, you will learn how to do a basic figure skating move. The one-foot spin is a step closer to the waltz jump. After you've read this article, check out my other article called: Beginning Figure Skating: Waltz Jump

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • figure skates
  • a place to skate
  1. Step 1

Stand on the ice. Your first time at a one-foot spin shouldn't be done in motion. Pick a foot to stand on while spinning.

  2. Step 2
Your feet should look something like this

Next, take the opposite foot and stand on the toe pick. This will be the foot you push off of.

  3. Step 3

Now, the arm on the same side of the foot you are standing still on should be tucked into your chest. To do this, make your hand into a fist and put it towards the opposite side of your chest.

  4. Step 4
It probably won't look like this the first time, but it will if you keep practicing.

Then, use the other arm and the "push-off" foot to spin in a circle. Keep that foot raised and tuck the other arm in overlapping the opposite arm. Keep practicing!

Tips & Warnings
  • By tucking in your arms, this makes you go faster.
  • Make sure that when you tuck in your arms they make an "x" shape over your chest.
  • Don't look down when you spin or this could send you straight down onto the ice.
  • As with any sport, ice skating has it's risks. Make sure you aren't alone when trying new ice skating moves so that if you fall and get hurt, people around you can help you.
