The success of a rummage sale is based on two goals: To eliminate possessions and to make money. Getting rid of stuff while making extra cash is a rewarding experience. Do everything that you can to attract buyers and sell stuff.

1. Promote and market your sale for maximum traffic. Hang signs around your neighborhood, advertise on a public access channel or post it on a website. Hold your sale in conjunction with other neighbors, or organize a neighborhood-wide event.

2. Offer free coffee, water or lemonade. The longer people linger at your rummage sale, the more likely they are to purchase something.

3. Organize items on tables according to categories. Place girls' clothing on one table and boys' clothing on another. Group tools together, and display toys at kids' eye level. This will help customers quickly locate the items that they are hunting for.

4. Price items to move. While you want to make money, you also are hoping to get rid of stuff you no longer need.

5. Barter and negotiate with customers.

6. Recruit your children to help. Some of the more successful rummage sales involve kids selling items. Create a table for toys and allow the kids to collect any revenue from their sale. Including kids helps them learn about math and money.
