Leaving your job on a positive note
Leaving your job on a positive note

It's important to resign from your job on a positive note. No matter what the circumstances are for your desire to move on, use these tips for the best results.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with printer
  1. Step 1

Stay positive. The resignation letter isn't the place to air your complaints about the company. It's meant to give appropriate notice for the company to replace you and to announce your exit. If nothing else, the job gave you experience which you need to be thankful for.

  2. Step 2

Try to stick to 3 paragraphs. First paragraph should express your intention of leaving. Examples would be: "Please accept my letter of resignation. I will be vacating my position on April 30, 2009, giving you two weeks to fill this vacancy. I will finish all projects currently assigned to me before leaving (company name)."

  3. Step 3

Your second paragraph should briefly explain why you're leaving. This isn't the place to discuss unfair treatment or complain about co-workers. Stay positive. REMEMBER - POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS MAY CONTACT THIS EMPLOYER AND YOU WANT A GOOD REFERRAL. Example of a second paragraph might be "After much thought and consideration, I feel that moving to another company best meets my future job objectives. I will truly miss the people and work assignments at ____________ and will remember all that I've learned.

  4. Step 4

Finally, show gratitude in your last paragraph. Example "I wish much success to ___________ Company in its future. I am moving toward my career objectives in my new position and take with me the experience this position has given me. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you."

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay positive - You will be listing this company on your resume which allows future employers to contact it. You want to leave a good impression.
  • Be grateful for the job you're leaving.
  • Wish the company well.
