If you want to make extra money hosting a yard sale, you must advertise that sale. Yes, you can use the internet and make signs to hang around your neighborhood, but it is always a good idea to place a yard sale listing in your local newspaper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money to Pay for an Ad
  1. Step 1

You need to choose a newspaper. One or two newspapers will work. If you have a weekly classified newspaper, this is likely filled with yard sale listings. Include yours, but don’t miss the early deadline. For daily newspapers, it is best to aim for a Wednesday and Thursday listing.

  2. Step 2

Read the pricing information for the classified section. Most newspapers have this outlined right in their paper or you can contact their local offices. Some newspapers charge per word and others charge per line. Know how much you can expect to pay ahead of time.

  3. Step 3

Start writing your yard sale listing. To get started, write yard or garage sale. Then state the date and time, as well as your address. If you intend to postpone your sale in the event of rain, provide a rain date so that shoppers still won’t arrive.

  4. Step 4

Post a small summary of what you have available. Many Americans will host yard sales this year due to the poor economy. Your sale may be one of 100 in the nearby communities. To ensure shoppers stop by your sale, provide a sample of what you have available. You don’t have to go into great detail. A good example includes “Many items for sale, including kids clothes and toys, books, movies, and more!”

  5. Step 5

Proofread your garage sale listing. Mistakes are common, but they can be a big inconvenience with yard sale listings. You can have shoppers show up on the wrong day, too early, or go to the wrong house. Make sure your information is accurate.

  6. Step 6

Mail in or drop off your yard sale listing paperwork with payment. Most newspapers accept payment in person. If you opt to mail yours, give yourself a few extra days to ensure delivery. You don’t want to see your Friday morning yard sale advertised in Friday’s afternoon paper.
