Grants for private schools are often difficult to find, but getting one is well worth the effort it takes to search. Luckily, there are a few different types of grants offered to individuals who would like to attend private school or send their child to private school. Below, you’ll learn some important information on how to obtain grants for private schools.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check merit-based grants. One of the first things you should do is evaluate your child’s academic abilities. Often times, children with exceptional academic talent will be given merit-grants due to their overwhelming achievements in the classroom. If your child is gifted, this may be one route you can take to obtain a grant for a private school. You will need to collect documents, awards and other proof of your child’s academic talents. You should be able to get these from your child’s current school.

  2. Step 2

Contact the private schools in your area. Your next step should be to contact the financial aid offices of the private schools in your area. You can find a list in your phone book or by visiting http://privateschool.about.com/od/usschoolsbystate/Schools_Listed_By_State.htm. Once you have the contact information, give the financial aid offices a call. Ask which types of grants they have available and whether your child could enter their school on a merit-based grant.

  3. Step 3

Look into discount grants for siblings. If you have one child enrolled at a private school, you should know that many schools give discount grants for siblings. Often you can get the tuition discounted significantly or your second child can even enter free based on a sibling discount grant. When calling the private schools in your area, ask if they offer discount grants for siblings.

  4. Step 4

Look into government grants. The government often provides grants either to individuals or the private schools in order to help children who can’t afford the tuition to attend. The specific amount of the grant depends on the grant you apply for, your area, the cost of tuition at the private school of your choice and more. There are several ways of finding government grants for private schooling, including asking the school when you call their financial aid office.

Another option is to visit www.Grants.gov. This website can be a helpful tool because they keep an up to date list of the grants offered by the government on every topic. Use the keyword search option on the site to look for grants for private schools. You can obtain the details about the grant and the grant applications here as well.

  5. Step 5

Be aware of deadlines. It’s extremely important that you’re aware of the deadlines with both the grant applications and registering for the private school you have chosen. You can get that grant deadline information from www.Grants.gov by searching the grant by its code number and checking the details. Further information on grants can be found at http://www.schoolgrants.org/Grants/nation-no_deadline.htm.

By using the steps above, you can obtain grants for private schools and seek the education you or your child deserves.
