Step 1
Cut out fried foods. Many things that we fry can be baked in the oven with healthier results. You can also get a crisp effect by using the spray oil and applying a light coat. Be sure to use the healthier oils such as canola and olive oil.
-
Step 2
Substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef in recipes. You can even make your our sausage by seasoning up ground poultry with sage and thyme (just find a recipe you like.)
-
Step 3
Cumin adds a smoky flavor and can be substituted for bacon in recipes that bacon is used as a flavor additive. Just remember that healthy oil needs to replace any rendered bacon fat.
-
Step 4
When cooking soups and sauces using fatty meat be sure to let the liquid sit for several minutes while you periodically skim the surfaced fat off the top.
-
Step 5
Sneak vegetables and healthful ingredients in where ever you can. You will be surprised how creative you can get while greatly improving flavor. For example instead of having just mashed potatoes you could boil some chopped parsnips with the potatoes and smash them together or instead of a plain salad you could toss some shredded carrots and other raw veggies.
-
Step 6
There are many lowered fat versions of cheese and other dairy just be careful not to go fat-free because it will negatively change the taste.
-
Step 7
Increase your fiber intake. It is important for digestive health and weight management. Adding fiber rich veggies to your meals and eating whole grain breads is a good start. Remember to shop wisely though because some whole grain breads are better for you than others.
-
Step 8
Keep an eye out for foods that are fortified and enriched. Many companies are offering healthy alternatives, such as whole grain pastas, that you can trade for the traditional to boost the nutrition content of you meals.
-
Step 9
Try to reduce salt and avoid prepackaged, premade foods. they are high in sodium and other additives. You can just as easily through something together on your own that taste a lot better. That also gives you the chance to sneak in some healthy additives of your own such as vegetables.
-
Step 10
Increase your water intake. It is one of the simplest, and most commonly over looked, thing that we can do for our overall health.
