Frame a Tray Ceiling
Frame a Tray Ceiling

Framing a tray ceiling is done two ways, the easy way and the hard way. This article will cover the basic construction to framing a tray ceiling using less materials and still getting the best possible tray.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure, saw, hammer, chalk line.
  • 2x4s, 1/2" OSB
  1. Step 1

When your looking at a blueprint and you see the detail for the tray ceiling that is about all the help it gives you for building it. A tray ceiling can be framed a lot of different ways, it could be a Hip tray, step tray, it could be built out of all 2x4's or it can be made simple with 2x4's and 1/2" OSB. We are going to cover the easy way with 1/2" OSB because this technique can be used to frame any kind of tray design. It uses a lot less materials, turns out a lot nicer and it is a lot faster to build the tray ceiling this way.

  2. Step 2

To start chalk a line down the ceiling and wall to the width and height of the tray then nail in a 2x4 to your chalk line. Next you will need to cut some 1/2" OSB to the height measurement of the tray and nail a 2x4 on the flat side flush to the factory cut edge on the OSB. [each straight run should be built in one peace if you can] After you build one run install it to the 2x4 on the ceiling then take your total width measurement and subtract 3-1/2" to cut two 2x4 blocks. Put one block in each corner then string a line from one corner to the other.

  3. Step 3

After the string line is setup run a quick layout at 16" on center on the 2x4 on the wall and the 2x4 on the OSB. Next go to the center layout mark of the tray and adjust it to the string line then measure your 2x4 block that is needed. Repeat this till all the blocks are in. That now completes one run of the tray ceiling repeat these steps to finish up. NOTE: two of the trays "RUNS" can run all the way to the walls.
